Behind the BarThe Tasting Room: Knob Creek (@knobcreek)

I have to say Knob Creek Bourbon has me speechless! Yes, I was aware that Knob Creek was exceptional bourbon and yes, I was aware that it was highly appreciated. What took me of guard was the fact that it works, period. What I mean is that there was not a single drink that I made where it wasn’t an improvement because of Knob Creek.

A little history behind a bottle of Knob Creek; it was the passion of Booker Noe, grandson of Jim Beam. It has a pre-prohibition style; it has a wonderful wood flavor from the nine years it spent in oak barrels. The name came from a small creek that runs by Abraham Lincoln’s home when he was growing up. Booker created bourbon fit to be at the President’s bar at all times. It is a wonderful example of American bourbon and is damn near perfect.

So I know it is obvious where this is heading! Well then let me sell you on why it is heading that way. First, it is 100 proof bourbon so the fact that it is smoother to the palette than some 80 proof bourbons make anyone give a look. Second, it is the most versatile bourbon I have tasted. It has a hint of sweet, a hint of oak; a full-bodied long smooth finish and I dare to say it has umami! Third, it is best with a touch of water or one ice cube to open it up. Fourth, when you make a Manhattan, an Old Fashion, or a Bourbon sour; Knob makes the drink. What does that mean? Instead of asking why one would use Knob Creek, you should ask why haven’t I used Knob Creek. Finally, it was the swagger about it: the name, the bottle, even the waxed capping with the name stamped into it, Knob Creek demands the respect it already knew you would give it.

With everything I have experienced with Knob Creek, I believe that the 9 year wait for the first bottle of Knob Creek was a well-laid plan. The fact that they have outsold their supply and apologized for it shows the passion they have for their product. The legend of Knob Creek will grow with the years, and the quality and passion will remain so everyone will be able to enjoy this classic style bourbon.

I recommend having Knob Creek with all classic drink recipes that ask for bourbon whiskey. Grabbing a bottle of Knob Creek as a starting point for a drink is not a bad idea. Does this mean it is the king of bourbon? No. There is no way to ever say there is a king; however, it is one of the most complete bourbon on the market. Knob Creek is worthy of a 5 out of 5 rating.
